The ECOWAS Refrigerators and Air Conditioners Initiative (ECOFRIDGES) is a joint project in Ghana and Senegal, which aims to accelerate adoption of energy-efficient and climate-friendly domestic refrigerators and room air conditioners, saving consumers money on their electricity bills, relieving demand on the power sector, and mitigating impacts on the environment. A cornerstone of ECOFRIDGES activities in Ghana is a Green On-Wage (GO) financial mechanism to help make these cooling products more affordable and accessible. Local financial institutions are unlocking financing to support the purchase of thousands of sustainable cooling appliances. The scheme includes an option for consumers to turn-in an old operable cooling appliance for recycling and receive a voucher toward a future purchase from a participating vendor.

The video traces the market transformation achieved thus far in Ghana through ECOFRIDGES GO. Interactions with different stakeholders explore the key benefits realised by the program and its anticipated impacts.

By May 2022, ECOFRIDGES GO achieved:

  • 1838 new certified refrigerators and ACs sold
  • GHS 8 million / US$ 1 million of finance mobilized / unlocked
  • 17’436 MWh of total energy savings / residential electricity demand reduced lifetime equipment.
  • 14’445 tonnes CO2 of total CO2 Emission Reduction/Saved lifetime equipment.

ECOFRIDGES GO is made possible by funding from the Clean Cooling Collaborative and in-kind contributions from Ghana Energy Commission, Ghana Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations Environment Programme’s United for Efficiency (UNEP U4E) initiative and the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE)..
